Edward Burne-Jones and the Pre-Raphaelites by Adrian Sumner

or How Desperate Romantics Became Dreamers of Decadence

Looking at the groundbreaking and gorgeous paintings of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, their contemporary followers and legacy, and their formative influence on the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, Decadence, International Symbolism and the Aesthetic Movement. We focus particularly on the genius of Burne-Jones, and how his ‘Golden, dim dreams’ shaped the style and thinking of a generation of artists in Britain in Continental Europe and in America. And then we explore how the dreams of ‘three visionary boys’ inspired the colours, shapes and ideas of Burne-Jones, and then of Beardsley, Mackintosh, Moreau, Khnopff, Klimt, the Vienna Secession, Lalique, Tiffany, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, finding echoes in Flower-power, Biba, and the Psychedelia of the Swinging Sixties.

This lecture links to our Heritage Tour to Birmingham on Saturday 22 March and the Collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
