Davenham Players present Self Catering by Andrew Cullen.

A plane loaded with holiday-makers crash lands on a deserted island, somewhere en route to Majorca. Cullen’s five castaways straggle out of a plane crash in wonderfully cacophonous confusion with their Costa leisurewear already smirched and torn. Carefully sorted by their author to be ill-assorted, they soon suggest, by the blackly comic way they react to one comatose companion, that civilisation must be a very loose term for where they came from.

Strangers hitherto, they soon recognise the opportunity to choose afresh whom to be. At the instigation of Henry, a movie-bore in cinemascope, they decide to become Marilyn, Clint, and Bette. Their unconscious companion they dub Meryl. The irony is, of course, that the types we have already recognised – earnest wimp, Essex girl, macho man, rebarbative feminist – have picked their own idealised self-images. Life is a movie in which we merely play roles.

The five survivors are forced not only to come to terms with the disaster, but also deal with the prospects of survival in an unforgiving atmosphere. The play explores the range of human behaviour as this society in miniature gradually disintegrates, yet emerging as a most refreshing and entertaining new play.

Contains strong language - not suitable for children.
